Accident Summary

On the 4th of March, 2014, four ski patrollers from the Wolf Creek Ski Area were transported via helicopter to Pt. 12,505, approximately one mile west of Conejos Peak and approximately 16 air miles SE of the Wolf Creek Ski Area for the purpose of area reconnaissance. The group split into two groups of two. The victim and his partner went to a location where the victim dug a snowpit while his partner watched and spotted him from above. Meanwhile the other group of two descended in adjacent terrain and were waiting at the helicopter pick-up area near the valley bottom. At approximately 1:30 PM, while the victim was exiting the slope after completing his snowpit the avalanche released and he was swept away. He was located by beacon search and rapidly extricated by his partner and the second team of two patrollers.  Resuscitative efforts were initiated at the site and were maintained as he was flown to Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango.  He was pronounced deceased at approximately 4:45 PM by attending physicians. We extend our sincere condolences to family and friends.
