Accident Summary

PRELIMINARY: A backcountry tourer walked onto a cornice along the Mount Arkansas ridgeline. The cornice broke under the tourer, and he was caught in the resulting avalanche. The avalanche carried the skier though a gully and partially buried him about 1000 vertical feet below the ridge. The tourer self-rescued. He was injured and evacuated by Search and Rescue.
