The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) is a program within the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS), which is a division of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. The CAIC is a cash funded government agency, which means that we do not receive General Funds for backcountry avalanche forecasting or education. The CAIC's funding comes from the Severance Tax (tax on the oil and gas industries), grants, and donations from people who use our products.
We are avalanche forecasters, not tax experts, but most donations to government programs are tax deductible. Consult your tax professional for details. If you would like to donate to a 501(c)3 entity, contact our partner group the Friends of the CAIC.

The Friends of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center is a non-profit group founded in 2008. The mission of the Friends of the CAIC is to support avalanche safety in Colorado through education and forecasting. One major goal of the Friends of the CAIC is to ensure that the CAIC has adequate funding to conduct forecasting operations each winter and develop new way to help the public make good avalanche decisions.
