Two snowmobilers were caught in a very large avalanche near Kebler Pass, west of Crested Butte. The avalanche occurred on a south and southeast-facing slope below treeline. Estimates of the avalanche dimensions are 600 feet wide. The crown ranged from 2 to 5 feet deep, averaging 3 feet. The avalanche ran about 750 vertical feet, into the valley bottom where debris piled up as deep as 20 feet. The avalanche was large relative to the path (R4), and capable of burying a person (D2.5). One snowmobiler was caught and partially buried. The other was fully buried and killed.
CAIC and CBAC staff will visit the site on 2/11. We will update with additional information as it is available.
