3/22/2023 Field Report - Front Range
Report Information
ECT 16, 6cm wind/storm layer followed by moderately cohesive snowpack. ECT failed at 30cm deep. The aspect of SFB is W/ SW. Photos of the pit are attached, admittedly not my best work. Line skied well, and mirrored pit results. Ski cut on the sidewall resulted in D1 storm slab avalanche that ran the entirety of the couloir. Crown of the avalanche was 15cm - 20cm. The toe of the avalanche extended 80' from the base of the avalanche depth of debris ~1M at the deepest. W aspects in couloir were wind scoured but stable. NW is windloaded (this is lookers right from the bottom), this is the aspect that was skicut and resulted in the slide. Wind was blowing from the east, cornice SE facing on top of Black Mountain.
Went to black mountain area, skied shit for brains. Climbed the ridge and descended the couloir. Ridge was windy, couloir was baren for the first 100'. SFB itself skied somewhat poorly with a hard wind layer + sluff. Ski cuts resulted in small avalanches.
