2/3/2024 Field Report - Sawatch
Report Information
We transitioned on a ridge line on the way up to clover mountain. We were trying to ski a south east face with an average angle or 40 degrees. Skier 1 descends the slope and stops at a safe point behind a tree line. Skier 2 starts their decent, and after making their second turn the slope fractured 50 meters above skier 2. The avalanche runs 400 vertices feet. Skier 2 is able to ski faster than the slide and makes it to a safe zone. The debris hits skier 1 at the bottom of the pitch and hurries him chest deep. The rest of the group watching extricates skier 1. The slide was triggered on a shallow spot near a rock band. It broke on a a persistent weak layer and stepped to the ground. The crown was 150 feet wide and 4 feet deep.
We left the lost wonder hut trying to make it to the clover mountain Ridgeline and ski the chutes off of the peak.
