Observation Summary

I dug three quick pits on southeast, east, and northeast-facing slopes to get a baseline understanding of snow depth and structure for the Telluride area. At 11,500', I found the snowpack ranged from about 50 to 80 cms deep and was comprised mostly of facets. It seems like on the southeast and east-facing slopes, most of the earliest snowfall melted away. But on the northeasterly slope, I found a layer for every snowfall event thus far this season. This included the Halloween storm, which formed a unique rain crust around Telluride. The new snow from the last storm is faceting quickly here, resulting in no propagation or failures in long column tests.
