Report Information

Area Description

Batchplant highway path and vicinity on the west side of Eisenhower Tunnel

Route Description

I parked at the CDOT facility near the Tunnel and then gained the ridge to the east of Batchplant for snowpack observations. I traveled on south to east-facing slopes below treeline, southeast and east-facing slopes near treeline and east-facing slopes above treeline.

Snowpack

Cracking: None
Collapsing: None

Snow surfaces were wet everywhere I traveled that had a hint of a south-facing aspect. Below treeline, east-facing snow surfaces were also wet, however near and above treeline the surface on east-facing terrain was dry. I dug a pit on a southeast-facing slope near treeline and found last weekend's storm snow sitting on top of a snowpack that has already had water percolating to the ground. Last weekend's storm snow was wet in the top 20cm of the snowpack and moist to about 40cm down. Below this was a melt-freeze crust that was the pre-storm surface.

Weather

Warm! CLR to FEW skies and an occasional very light NW wind.
