Report Information
There was roughly 6" of new snow in this area- staying cold and dry above treeline and rapidly settling and moistening at lower elevations with any sun exposure. I saw a couple small loose avalanches coming off SE aspects on Red peak (see photo). I did some spot probing on a north facing slope at 12,000' and found HS ranging from 180-210cm. The snowpack on an east facing slope at 12,500' was deeper than my probe (300cm) and a hasty pit showed 15-20cm of fist hard, wind-drifted new snow on top of a very thin crust with 1cm of weak snow below and pencil hard slab below that for at least 80cm (assuming much more, I only dug about a meter). The crust/facet combo may be a concerning weak layer in the future but today there was no slab quality in the new snow and I observed no signs of instability or slab avalanches anywhere I could see.
