Report Information

Observation Summary

Looking out at the La Plata Mountains from Durango, it's easy to see that there isn't much snow left at lower elevations. Snow coverage is confined to upper elevation basins and is most reliable on north slopes. The last few days have offered overnight freezing temps and snow surfaces supportable to ski pressure. While there is plenty of evidence of a shed cycle from the last few weeks of warm temperatures, many slopes have maintained smooth surfaces unblighted by loose activity.

Area Description

Babcock Peak

Avalanches

Saw an avalanche

Previous loose wet avalanche activity observed on many slopes due to warm temperatures over the last few weeks.

Snowpack

Overnight freezing temperatures have capped moist snow with around 20cm of refrozen surfaces. This re-freeze provides a supportable surface for ski pressure but is variable in supportability to boot pressure. Dust has reemerged on many slopes. All aspects and elevations have experienced the recent warm temperatures, settling out any instabilities that may have emerged from recent snow.

Weather

Warm, sunny, and generally calm winds. A high of 49 degrees and prevailing wind direction from the south.
