On June 1, a solo backcountry skier triggered a wet slab avalanche in an area of Independence Pass locally known as Fourth of July Bowl. The avalanche swept him approximately 400 vertical feet downhill. When he came to rest, he was partially buried, with his head and one arm above the snow. He extricated himself from the debris.
