Report Information

Observation Summary

I wanted to see what the incoming storm would land on. How weak is the old snow? The answer is quite weak. I found small (1-2mm), very soft (Fist hard) facets in each place that I looked. Once the new snow settles into a slab above the old snow, it will be easy to trigger avalanches.

Area Description

North of Crested Butte

Route Description

Drive up Slate River, through Paradise Divide, down Gothic/East River Valley.

Weather

Snowfall started in the peaks of the West Elk and Elk Mountains (above around 12,000') mid-afternoon, with valley rain beginning late afternoon.
