Report Information

Observation Summary

Since Feb. 1, Glen Cove Snotel has gained about one inch of Snow Water Equivalent(SWE), lost it during a warm-up, and regained it recently.
Recent snow measured ~1.50ft, total depth of ~2.5ft, near the bottom of the old ski area, increasing overall depth. Typical drifting and scouring patterns persist. Generally isolated to leeward/sheltered slopes and bare ground or dry rigid snow on exposed slopes. Skis would sink 1-2ft in unconsolidated snow below treeline. Snow near treeline was more supportive/wind-affected. Obvious signs of instability(cracking) were isolated to recently drifted, firm, snow near exposed ridge lines.

Area Description

Pikes Peak Massif

Route Description

Traveled up through Old Pikes Peak Ski Area and returned along similar route.

Avalanches

Saw an avalanche

Recently reported. Small(~30'x20'), loose dry, directly below drifted ridgeline.

Snowpack

Cracking: Minor
Collapsing: None

Below treeline(NE), the snowpack is mostly cohesionless. Near and above treeline, wind and persistent slab structures can be found on isolated leeward slopes. Snowpack test results(HS:140cm) showed propagating failure mid-pack under a newly formed slab among strong and weak persistent layers. A previous pit(1/29, HS:110cm) in the same location showed non-propagating failures due to a lack of a cohesive slab.

Weather

Strong NW wind blowing snow ATL in the AM, warm for Feb., few clouds streamed by mid-day.
