Report Information

Observation Summary

About a foot and a half of consistent snow coverage. Mostly dry cold snow!

Area Description

South side of Grand Mesa

Route Description

Toured east from Island Lake along the south side of Crag Crest

Snowpack

Snow coverage was consistent and depths were 40-50 cm in loose trees and open areas near tree line. It looked like the whole snowpack was from the last storm and the whole pack was fist hard, dry, and beginning to facet to the ground. There was quite a bit of surface hoar from the last few nights which was preserved in the shade. Sunny aspects were moist by midafternoon but quickly refreezing. There was also a layer of buried surface hoar about 3cm down in the snowpack, but no other obvious layers.

Weather

Mostly sunny skies with thin high clouds and a slight breeze all day. Afternoon temps were just over freezing.
