Report Information

Observation Summary

Around 50 cm or 20 inches of new snow observed in the Red Mountain Pass area. Strong winds drifted the snow and I observed drifts pushing 3 feet in depth. The new snow was softer in protected areas and stiffer and more wind-effected on exposed slopes near and above treeline. One thing of note is when I was dusting off my truck in Silverton, 9,300 feet, I could see two distinct layers in the storm snow and it was a bit up-side down. I did not see that same layering in the new snow at 11,000 feet on Red Mountain Pass. Limited cracking and no collapsing observed today. I was able to trigger a few small soft slab avalanches on step slopes failing on both crusts and facests. Southerly winds were rapidly loading north and east slope near and above treeline. When the clouds parted I was able to see some widespread storm snow loose avalanche activity out of steep rocky slopes but only one small slab. I did not observe any avalanches that stepped into deeper weak-layers.

Area Description

Red Mountain Pass.

Route Description

Top of Red Mountain Pass to Putney weather station. Carbon knob down "oh boy"

Avalanches

Triggered avalanche

I triggered 3 D1 avalanches below treeline. All three avalanches failed at the new/older interface. On a more west slope the avalanches failed on a curst and on a more north facing slope that avalanche failed on weak faceted snow.

Snowpack

Cracking: Minor
Collapsing: None

A lot of new snow on a bunch of weird surfaces. Cold weak snow lurks in the middle and bottom of the snowpack.

Weather

Light snow on and off through the day. Winds where whipping at ridgeline but much calmer lower in elevation. Temperatures were mild and it felt humid.
