Breaking trail on the ridge above Midnight Trees, our group observed numerous rumbling collapses and shooting cracks. After ascending above treeline skier 2 was moving through a kick turn and felt a collapse. Rider 3 was just within sight of the crown and watched the avalanche fracture.
The group was on an east facing aspect. Avalanche was triggered from 100’ away. Ran on NE aspect ATL. Crown was 50’ wide, 1-3’ deep. Failed at the ground in places. Triggered at least 1, possibly 2 secondary avalanches as it ran. Toe of the avalanche was observed 1200’ below the initial crown.
