Accident Summary

Preliminary information:
On Saturday, March 22, 2025 a snowmachiner was caught, buried, and killed in an avalanche on the backside of Seattle Ridge at Turnagain Pass, AK. This occurred in Warmup Bowl, also known as -1 Bowl. The avalanche was triggered by the rider who was caught and subsequently buried 10 feet deep. The avalanche crown was 2 to 3 feet deep and approximately 500 feet wide. It failed on a weak layer of buried surface hoar. Riders from multiple other groups riding in the area responded quickly and managed to extricate the buried rider roughly one hour after the avalanche occurred, which is remarkably fast given the burial depth. Despite that impressive effort, the rider was deceased by the time rescuers dug him out of the debris.

The debris pile was 10-15 feet deep on average where the rider was buried. This was a portion of the debris that collected in a depression near a wind feature near the middle of the vertical run of the path. The majority of the debris ran to a depression at the toe of a moraine roughly 250 feet past where the rider was buried, and was an estimated 20 feet deep or deeper.
