Report Information

Observation Summary

This is not a joke. I am reporting that many roofs are having major issues with the 8 inches of snow with heavy rain occurring overnight in Gunnison. Large sections of snow on rooftops are sliding off at an alarming rate. It sounds like a thunderstorm outside from all of the roof avalanches occurring overnight with the addition of heavy rain. Please warn people not to stand under suspect roofs that have large amounts of snow on them. 1 person was killed in Crested Butte a few years back from a roof avalanche that slid thousands of pounds of snow on top of them. A second person was also buried. This is a serious issue that could kill someone if they are standing in the wrong place when an entire roof worth of snow collapses on them. The rain is still persisting overnight and the sound of all the roofs on my house and my neighbors houses displacing such large amounts of new snow. As the rain falls, it's overloading the snow and also providing slick interface between the snow and roof surfaces.

CAIC Notes

Corrected report for old roof avalanche incident.
