Accident Summary

Observation Summary

A group of four skiers boot packed the Dead Dog Couloir on Torrey's peak, with all four attaining the top of the couloir by approximately 10:30 AM. While preparing to transition from climbing to skiing at the narrow top of the ridge above the couloir, I triggered a wind slab avalanche that broke approximately 24" deep and 50 feet wide at 10:35 AM. The other three were standing on the ridge to skiers left of the avalanche but I was swept up in the avalanche. In an attempt to get to the skiers' left side of the path, I rolled over twice and then used the ice axe that I still held in the self-arrest position from the ascent, to execute a self-arrest approximately 25 feet below the trigger point. The slide continued down the entire couloir, as verified by members of the group that subsequently skied it.
