Report Information

Observation Summary

At the start of the day we discussed conditions and the similar slide on Pat’s Knob. We planned to not ski in Avalanche terrain or in runouts of Avalanche paths. Snow was phenomenal on the low angle bowl up high. When returning from the gentle bowl we passed near the large path below pt. 12396. We discussed the hazard and how far the avalanche could run. We gave the path plenty of berth and skied a small pitch below one at a time. We looked back and to our horror, we had remotely triggered the face. It ran to the point that we expected and our tracks were not impacted. However, it still all felt a bit too close for comfort.

Connected with another party in the area to confirm there were no victims and that party called in the avalanche.

Approx 1:50pm. Crown up to 8’ in places. Estimated R2D2.5. When checking out the toe of the avalanche (not under the hangfire side) we probed well over 3m deep and the probe still did not hit the bottom. A bit sobering.

Route Description

Skied the low angle S facing bowl at the very top of Watrous gulch. When returning back from that bowl we remote triggered the much larger bowl below pt 12,396
