Report Information

Observation Summary

The coverage in this area is variable. Low coverage on most aspects except northerly and leeward aspects. Wind was mild. Partly cloudy in the morning, with clouds building and minor snow fall in the late afternoon. There was a noteable crust above tree line on N, and NE aspects with a few inches of new snow on top. There was a hollow layer lower in the snowpack near and below treeline but above treeline the crust was too thick to push a pole into and the crust consistently supported the body weight of a skier. Riding down the NE gully, I triggered 2 avalanches. They were small and something that was mostly expected and discussed by our group at the top. These wet loose avalanches ran on the crust layer. The first one was up high at the start of the gully. L-ARc-R1-D1. The second one was half way down the gully. L-ARu-R1-D1. As another member of our party skied down, they triggered another wet loose avalanche that was larger than the 2 previously listed. L-ASu-R1-D2.

When riding down the NW aspect coverage was low near the ridgeline and better in the gully on NE aspects. Riding was good through most elevation bands of the gully. As we got below treeline in the gully, following the creek, ski penetration was knee deep + in unsupportable wet snow and travel was difficult.

Route Description

Toured from Ute pass to northern part of Ute Peak Ridge line. Dropped NE Chute down 1800', back up close to Ute Peak and then the center NW gully, along the creek and back down to the road.
