Report Information
Hi-
I went for a short tour on the east side of Red Mountain Pass. On the drive up from Ouray, I noticed two impressive natural wet slab avalanches that must have occurred during the hot weather last weekend or earlier this week, since I did not see them when I was up there last Thursday, May 8.
The avalanches were on north and northwest-facing slopes and although seen from a distance, I'd estimate them to be 2 or 3 feet deep and 100+ feet wide. Avalanche #1 was above Ironton, in Gray Copper Gulch, off Red Mt Point 12,094. Avalanche #2 was east of Yankee Girl Mine off of the prominent red spur north of Champion Gulch.
I found LOW avalanche danger, as forecasted. About an inch of new snow from overnight capped the very dusty snow surface from strong winds earlier in the week. The old snow was hard and supportable except in areas where the snow was shallow, and ski conditions were fast, with the best conditions on upper-elevation low-angled slopes.
